PROJECT SPEAK UP
YWCA Kalamazoo’s Project Speak Up is on a mission to serve community members who have been impacted by hate crimes in Southwest Michigan.
Project Speak Up will empower schools, community organizations, and community members to create inclusive and supportive communities, by providing:
- Community Education on hate crimes, including how to report an incident of hate;
- Direct Services to Survivors of hate crimes through advocacy, legal clinics and support groups;
- Referrals to partnering community organizations.

Advocacy - Legal Clinics
Monthly free legal clinics will be offered at YWCA Kalamazoo to community members who have been impacted by hate crimes and are seeking support in filing a civil rights complaint and/or exploring possible avenues of legal recourse. Opportunity to have one-on-one confidential interaction with an attorney to discuss options. In no instance will there be a charge for the services of the clinic.
Legal Clinics will be held the last Wednesday of the month, March – July, 2017 at the YWCA Kalamazoo.

Counseling & Support
YWCA Kalamazoo’s Project Speak Up provides direct service through support groups and counseling services giving clients an opportunity to engage and address their trauma. Support groups take place at YWCA Kalamazoo monthly with additional supportive services available as needed. These services are available for anyone who has directly or indirectly been impacted by a hate crime.

YWCA Kalamazoo’s Project Speak Up is dedicated to building inclusive communities through engaging presentations, training opportunities and community outreach, using tolerance based curriculum with a focus on bystander intervention and violence prevention. Utilizing videos, open and honest dialogue, and interactive learning experiences, Project Speak Up aims to raise awareness, build personal and collective responsibility, and provide skills to challenge violence throughout our lives and community. We are supporting efforts for community collaboration uniting individuals and connecting them to resources at YWCA Kalamazoo.
These opportunities are available upon request for schools, colleges, groups, organizations, events, or businesses in Southwest Michigan.
