AWARENESS MONTH

The YWCA Kalamazoo is teaming up with local bars to promote awareness about sexual assault and the importance of consent. Consent is a mutual, verbal, physical, and emotional agreement that happens without manipulation, threats, or head games.

Participating bars will use a hand stamp that says, “Consent is Power,” during the month of April to raise awareness about the importance of mutually agreed upon and enthusiastic consent. Check our Facebook page weekly for a list of participating bars.

TEAL RIBBON CAMPAIGN

Location: YWCA  Kalamazoo

Across the country, the teal ribbon has come to represent awareness about sexual assault. In addition to the demonstration of support for victims and advocates, the display of teal ribbons throughout a community conveys a powerful message that there’s no place for assault in the homes, neighborhoods, workplaces, or schools of its citizens.

Throughout the month, teal ribbons are available at no cost at the YWCA Kalamazoo.

THE CLOTHESLINE PROJECT

This visual display bears witness to the devastating impact of sexual assault. A collection of t-shirts decorated by survivors, friends, family, and the community  will be on display at the YWCA Kalamazoo.

YWCA Kalamazoo and Water Street Coffee Joint will be launching a sexual assault awareness campaign throughout the month of April. All of Water Street’s four locations will be offering customers SAAM stickers and teal ribbons with a percentage of April sales to benefit the Sexual Assault program at YWCA Kalamazoo.Show your support of the YWCA and visit Water Street today!

TAKE BACK THE NIGHT – PRE EVENT

The pre-event, held from 6-7pm,will provide participants with an opportunity to demonstrate and knock down barriers to healing and finding support that best fits them.

TAKE BACK THE NIGHT

Time: 7:00 PM—9:00 PM

Take Back the Night is an internationally held event designed to raise awareness about sexual assault. This event, hosted by WMU’s FIRE! Sexual Assault Peer Educators, will allow participants to learn about local sexual assault resources, empower survivors to share their stories, march through the WMU campus to raise awareness and speak out. During the Take Back the Night main event held from 7-pm (directly following the pre-event), there will be speakers and support groups present to show us how we can break down these barriers to make a more supportive place for survivors. Campus and Community members are both welcome and encouraged to attend this annual event.

DENIM DAY

Denim Day has been internationally celebrated since 1999 in protest of an Italian High Court Ruling that overturned a rape conviction because the victim was wearing jeans. Enraged by the verdict, women of the Italian Legislation protested the decision by wearing jeans to work. As news of the decision spread, so did the protest. SURVIVORS SPEAK

Location: WMU’s Adrian Trimpe Multicultural Center

We will be featuring local poet Jesselyn Leach who will also act as the event emcee. The night will include light refreshments, poetry by survivors, an interactive activity, music, and a commemorative chapbook.

HOW TO BECOME INCLUSIVE AND AWARE

Location: YWCA Kalamazoo’s Dalton Room

The YWCA, in collaboration with KGLRC and Office of Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay , and Transgender Student Services of Western Michigan University, will be hosting an event to create awareness of Sexual Assault in regards to the LGBTQ community. Highlighting a resilient struggle for individuals who identify within the underserved population, in regards to lack of services, support, gender equity, and unhealthy relationships. In addition to dialogue and networking, there will be a panel with representation from different community organizations, from the collegiate level to Planned Parenthood. There will be delicious refreshments, networking, and effective dialogue.
